There comes a point in time when the endorsements get as brain dead stupid as the movies they're shilling, and STAR WARS has jumped over a whole fleet and a half of sharks. Lucas made a charming, funny, very cool film way back when, and now it's become this almost religion whose essential inanity has come to define what passes for American culture. And Disney being Disney will milk this sucker as long as it can.

My favorite character-branded product was during the one season "Shnookums and Meat" (a post-Ren & Stimpy cartoon about a dog and cat) was on TV.

It was some sort of pasta with sauce in a can, and what made it all so perfect (besides the fact that they were pretty feckless characters whose one good episode was the pilot) is that it contained not one speck of… wait for it …meat.

At one point in high school, the boys decided they wanted canned pasta -- Spaghetti-Os or something -- and after a small moment of trying to talk them out of it, I told them they could each get a dollar's worth. So they each got two cans of something or other, we went home, they each fixed a bowl of it and two months later I gave the two remaining cans to a food shelf. Sometimes it's easier not to argue.

What's so funny?

  • I read some 175 or more comics a day. Each day, I post a strip or two here that made me laugh, made me think or impressed me with its artistry. It's my hope that you'll see some new strips here and decide to follow that artist's work, and perhaps even to support that work by purchasing a collection of strips. But, mostly, I hope you'll find this a place to get a laugh or share a thought each day. After all, comic strips are a very demanding art form, but the ultimate point of all that work and all those deadlines is to give readers a little pleasure each day.     King Features' site, with free comics if you don't mind a truncated service, or a very good paid site for $20 a year. Some of the benefits, including Vintage strips, require that paid subscription. It's worth it.
